This mosaic which included ten bikini girls is from Villa Romana del Casale. It is a big and splendid villa, which is 3 kilometers away from the town of Piazza Armerina, Sicily. In this villa, archaeologists found one of the world’s largest and most abundant mosaics, which could be dated back to the 4th century B.C. The mosaic and opus sectile floors in this villa cover an area of about 3,500 m² and they were preserved in a different way due to landslide and floods.
In 1959, Gentili discovered a mosaic on the floor of a room, which was named the “Rome of the Gymnasts” later by archaeologists. This mosaic was given the name of Coronation of the Winner. In this mosaic, ten young girls were found in bikini-style clothes. And they joined in some sports, such as weightlifting and ball games. An official in a gown was holding a trophy on the left side while the winner was at the center of the whole mosaic. Bikini-style clothes worn by these girls became the spotlight instantly after the mosaic was excavated. This kind of clothes was very similar to modern bikinis.
