Officials point to a crackdown on alcohol abuse, public disorder and inappropriate clothing such as men’s bikini swimsuits, the tight-fitting men's swimsuits made popular by the comedian Borat, as a way to reduce crime. Devon and Cornwall Police inspector Dave Meredith, the town's most senior constable, said: "Everyone from patrol officers to PCSO's, town partners, shop owners, says Newquay has made a fantastic difference. "People want to come to Newquay and get drunk and do whatever they want. Many young people come to Newquay, seeing it as an opportunity to get drunk without restraint. We certainly managed that and newquay's image has improved." Police and community leaders say the town now has a more family-friendly image, and tourism is booming. Reports of anti-social behaviour fell from 937 in 2009-10 to 485 in 2012-13. Newquay's overall crime rate has also fallen sharply -- from 1,823 in 2012-13 to 1,624 in 2014-15.

Town’s reputation seemed be saved

Dave Sleeman, the town's mayor, says the resort is a far cry from its previous image. "I can remember back in the 2000s that you couldn't walk down the street on a Saturday without seeing someone wearing a mankini or something like that," he said. "But it's now banned in Newquay. If the police saw them wearing these, they would order them to go home and change. And hostels and campsites give their guests good advice on how to dress appropriately.
