When did tank tops enter the modern world?

So when did women’s tank tops show up? Just after 1920s, the booming modern society brought a revolution in fashion and popular culture in the word, before which no one would expose their arms in public. Women cut their hair shorter, wear more revealing dresses than ever, and like to engage in human interaction with male partners (like rebellious hand-holding!) while dancing or walking down the street.

Women's swimming was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden. A total of 27 women competed in these specific competitions, and their swimsuits were considered "undignified" by many news outlets and viewers. The costume they wore was very similar to a modern tank top, but with a short-like garment on the upper thigh.

While we might call it a "swimming pool" today, in the 1920s it was called a "swimming tank." For this reason, clothes worn by female swimmers are called "tank suits" -- in other words, clothes worn in water tanks! Tank tops are made of various materials including silk, which is usually transparent after being launched and is therefore considered highly inappropriate. Cotton was also used, and heavy wool materials were considered most suitable because they were thick and concealed.

The straps on the waistcoat are almost identical to those we see on the waistcoat today. The straps keep the suit up, but the lack of sleeves gives female swimmers the freedom of movement and flexibility they need to reach their full potential in the pool.
